Disney Cruise Line- A Guide for Guests Sailing with Food Allergies or Restrictions

Imagine setting sail on a magical voyage, surrounded by the enchanting world of Disney, with adventures awaiting you at every turn. Now, if you or your family members are like me and have food allergies / sensitivities, you might wonder if this dream will turn into a nightmare because of your dietary needs. Fear not! The Disney Cruise Line is well-equipped to ensure every guest can dine deliciously and safely onboard its ships and on the private Disney islands! A Disney Cruise Line vacation is actually one of the few I feel totally safe taking without packing an entire separate suitcase dedicated to just snacks and protein bars! On that note, let’s dive into how they make this possible.

Before You Board

Communication is Key

The first, and arguably most important step, happens before you even set foot on the ship. Upon booking your magical cruise, you MUST inform the Disney Cruise Line of any foods, oils, spices etc. that you need to be sure to stay clear of. This heads-up allows the the cruise line to flag your profile so the serving and culinary teams are aware of your restrictions.

You can do this by either contacting the Disney Cruise Line directly or informing your travel agent, who will then relay the information to the cruise line on your behalf. I cannot stress enough how important it is to let them know ahead of time so that it is attached to your booking before you get on the ship and it will print out on your meal ticket for each time you are seated at a restaurant. I also make a note in my iPhone and list out all the items I have told the cruise line about, and then I just check the list with the note in my phone to be certain everything is covered and I’m not going to regret anything later on.

Onboard the Ship

Specialized Allergy Menus Onboard the Disney Wish

The Disney Wish, one of the newest Disney ships, takes dining with food allergies or sensitivities to a whole new level. Here, you’ll find specific allergy-friendly menus that cater to various common allergies, including gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free, and egg-free options that will make your decisions much easier when ordering. You no longer have to guess if what you’re interested in has a forbidden ingredient in it if those are items you need to stay away from! These menus are available upon request at all the sit-down restaurants onboard the Disney Wish. Don’t worry, if you have more allergens than what are listed on the allergy menu, you can still order food and they will be sure to prepare it safely for you.

Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free Designations

Worrying about hidden allergens in your meal is a thing of the past if you must stay away from gluten or dairy! Across the entire fleet, you’ll notice that menu items are clearly marked with designations such as Vegetarian, Gluten-Free (GF) and Dairy-Free (DF). This transparency allows you to navigate the menu with ease, making your dining decisions safe and simple.

This meal is not something offered on the regular menu. I took bits and pieces of safe items available on the menu and had them put them together as one meal for me. It’s one of my favorite meals because it is full of items I love.

Extra Time and Care: A Promise

The Disney Cruise Line understands that preparing meals for guests with food allergies or sensitivities requires extra caution and time. If you notice your dish takes a bit longer to arrive than those of your table mates, know it’s because the culinary team is taking every step necessary to ensure your meal is safe, avoiding cross-contamination and adhering to your dietary needs.

One way I avoid this delay is by preordering all my meals with my server each night. While it takes away the spontaneity of ordering what you’re in the mood for at that exact moment because you order the day before, it allows you to dine at the same time as your family without causing their meals to be delayed or having you sit there in an hangry funk while they much away. (Not that I would EVER do that.) This extra care is part of Disney’s commitment to your health and satisfaction, and it makes for a much more pleasant dining experience all around.

Communicate with Your Server

Even with all the preparations made in advance, it’s essential that you let your server know about your dietary restrictions once aboard. Before ordering at a restaurant that does not involve your regular serving team, don’t forget to verify that everyone is aware of your allergies or sensitivities. They will communicate with the kitchen, and make sure that what is brought to your table is safe for you to eat. Don’t forget, the serving team is your ally in ensuring that your dining experience is as safe as it is enjoyable, and they can also offer insights into the best meal options for you.

Buffet and Quick Service Venues? Yes, You Can!

Buffet and quick service dining options are a hallmark of cruise vacations, and the Disney Cruise Line makes sure these experiences are accessible to all guests, even those with dietary restrictions. While visiting a buffet or deciding on a quick service meal, be sure to speak with a cast member before getting any food. They will guide you through the available options, helping you avoid potential allergens, and can also arrange for specially-prepared dishes that meet your dietary needs. There is even a separate location where allergy food is prepared safely on Disney’s islands too!

This flatbread is prepared on a gluten free crust, and they verified the ingredients with me three times before they would make it for me because one of my prohibited items is listed at the end of the ingredient list.

Living the Dream, Worry-Free

Disney’s approach to accommodating food allergies and sensitivities is just another example of their overall mission: to create unforgettable experiences for all guests, regardless of their dietary needs. The culinary teams aboard the Disney Cruise Line are not just trained in safe food handling practices but are also filled with the Disney spirit of making dreams come true. I personally can attest to the fact that the only time I get three full meals a day, including desserts is when I sail on the Disney Cruise Line because this mom is TIRED and she is NOT preparing herself huge meals of her “special” food that doesn’t make her sick.

To the families and adventurers contemplating a Disney cruise but concerned about dietary restrictions, rest assured that your food safety and satisfaction are taken very seriously. Whether you have one or two items you need to stay away from, or you’re like me and your list includes about 15 different things that will make you ill, Disney Cruise Line’s meticulous attention to detail, from the pre-trip preparations to the daily dining experiences, ensure that every guest, regardless of their dietary needs, can enjoy the magical and worry-free vacation they’ve been dreaming of.
